The Safety and Violence Initiative (SaVI) at the University of Cape Town invites abstracts for papers to be given at a conference entitled: Preventing violence and promoting safety in fragile and insecure environments, which will take place from 27 to 28 November 2017.

This conference will take place at the River Club in Observatory, Cape Town. The Conference will be multidisciplinary, and hence abstracts from all relevant academic fields are welcome.

Conference Objectives

This Conference offers an opportunity to researchers from all relevant academic disciplines working on violence prevention and safety promotion to present their current research. Practitioners involved in this field are also encouraged to submit abstracts.

Submission Requirements

Abstracts should be no longer than 300 words in which you should provide a title and clearly state the research objectives, methodology and findings. In addition, please include your bio and contact details.

Abstracts to be submitted via email by 6 October 2017 to 

Successful applicants will be informed by 13 October 2017.

The deadline for the submission of Conference papers will be 23 October 2017.

No honorarium or speaker fee will be paid to conference presenters.

Conference fees (including lunch and refreshments):

  • Academics/professionals: R450 per day
  • Students: R300 per day
