Postdoctoral position: Spatial change in South African cities

Monday, 2 January 2012

Professor Philip Harrison has been awarded the National Research Foundation (NRF) South African Research Chair in Development Planning and Modelling located at the School of Architecture and Planning, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

The research funding will enable him to support a number of doctoral, masters and honours students as well as a postdoctoral position. Applications are invited for the postdoctoral position starting 1 May 2011 (although the date is negotiable).

The NRF-sponsored research programme responds to the challenges of rapid urbanisation in the global South, and especially to the development of large and complex city-regions, with a focus on Johannesburg and the wider Gauteng region.

The research programme will identify, map, and analyse change in the city-region using both contemporary spatial technologies and current theoretical insights. It will include research into the roles of government and the private sector in shaping city-regions and into the relationships between community action and urban change.

Fellows will receive a tax-free stipend of ZAR 144 000 per annum. The postdoctoral fellowship will be awarded for a period of two years, with the renewal of the fellowship for the second year being dependant on satisfactory performance.

Preference will be given to candidates who hold a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. urban planning, architecture, geography, economics, politics, sociology, anthropology, environmental studies) from a university other than the University of the Witwatersrand.
