OUT-OF-THE-BOX Human Settlements Conference
Thursday 25 October 2018

South Africa is widely acclaimed for having one of the most advanced constitutions internationally, which recognises and advances human rights such as the right to good quality housing, education and health. Human settlements are integral to these social goods - not only in providing basic shelter and utilities - but also in progressive attainment of a good quality of life for all our citizens. Furthermore, realising these rights within existing resource limitations and within environmentally sustainable means provides a challenge.

This conference focuses on Science Technology and Innovation (STI) and how these can be leveraged to produce sustainable human settlements.

Themes

  1. Technology
    • Identification and selection
    • Life cycle (i.e. development, creation, production, marketability, maturity. etc.)
    • Monitoring & Evaluation
  2. Applying technology in human settlements: case studies
  3. Enablers
    • Education and capacity development needs
    • Financing to stimulate STI in sustainable settlements
    • Policy and legislation for STI in sustainable settlements

Academic papers on any of these topics will be double-blind peer reviewed and included in an electronic proceedings.
