AAPS recently acted as an endorser of the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI) Africa 2013 congress on local climate solutions, held in Dar es Salaam from 30 October to 1 November 2013. AAPS contributed to a congress session on climate change and planning education. Prof A.C. Mosha of the University of Botswana participated in the session on behalf of AAPS.
A key message emerging from the meeting was that capacity building is key to enabling local authorities to deal with climate change mitigation and adaptation.
It was emphasized that planning schools can and should play a major role in training planners who understand climate change issues, and can mainstream these issues into their everyday work, both as students as well as practicing planners.
It was noted that many schools are currently doing little in this area. Planning schools can help to disseminate climate change-related knowledge to those in the workplace through the running of executive short courses for local authority planners, as well as workshops, seminars, and so on.
