Tuesday, 22 November 2016

The School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa) is looking for a new Head of School, to start from 1 April 2017 or thereafter by agreement.

The School includes two accredited professional programmes in architecture and planning, and also offers postgraduate degrees in urban design, urban studies and other areas. It hosts over 500 students.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD in the field of Architecture, Planning or Urban Design, or professional and design accomplishments meriting appointment at a professorial level. A strong national, and ideally an international profile in at least one of the key fields is required. A practice or research orientation towards development in Africa would be a strong advantage.

Duties

The Head of School will be expected to build on its academic and professional achievements over a three to five year term. This appointment comes at a time when South African universities take on the challenges of meaningful social and cultural transformation, access and relevance. The streamlining of postgraduate degrees offerings, build diversity in the staff and student body, and maintaining an excellent profile in the respective professions will be key tasks, as well as seeking support for research, outreach, endowed posts, scholarships and teaching and learning initiatives. The post will also entail support for the culture of studio teaching and urban labs in a complex urban environment.
