Post-doctoral research opportunity: Energy access in Mozambique

Monday, 16 January 2017

The Bartlett Development Planning Unit (based at University College London) is seeking to appoint a post-doctoral research associate to work on project addressing sustainable energy access in Mozambique, funded by the British Academy.

Based in DPU’s vibrant hive of activity, a full-time post-doctoral research associate is required to work in a new British Academy project to understand the interactions between energy access and conflict in Mozambique.

The project “Sustainable Energy Access in Mozambique: Socio-political factors in conflict-laden urban areas” is funded by the Sustainable Development Programme of the British Academy. This scheme is provided under the Global Challenges Research Fund, which is part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitment.

The project is aimed at understanding the uneven geographical patterns of energy access in Mozambique; examining how the political economy of Mozambique influences energy access; and examining the everyday processes of symbolic and economic violence constraining energy access and will be delivered in partnership with the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane, in Maputo, Mozambique; University of Oxford; and the University of York, supported by local organisations in Mozambique. The project follows a methodology of knowledge co-production, combining traditional quantitative and qualitative methods with processes that integrate the knowledge of infrastructure managers and communities through participatory and co-design workshops.

The postholder will join an active research environment in DPU consisting of PhD students, research associates and academic staff members. The postholder will have the opportunity to visit research groups in partners’ organizations. The post holder will be invited to contribute to the DPU’s research clusters and contribute to the intellectual life of the department.
