The Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield (United Kingdom) has advertised a post-doctoral research associate position for an ESRC project on how increased engagement by China and other ‘non-traditional’ donors is impacting African cities.
The Department of Urban Studies and Planning seeks an enthusiastic and dynamic post-doctoral researcher to join an Economic and Social Research Council-funded project on urban development in Africa. The project will explore the multiple ways in which ‘new’ donors and investors, particularly the Chinese government and related actors, are engaging with African cities in the context of rapid urban growth.
Working alongside Dr Tom Goodfellow, the researcher will play a key part in the field research on the project, with core tasks including key informant interviewing; gathering government and investment data and analysing policy documents. Experience of fieldwork in the Global South and qualitative research methodologies is therefore an essential requirement. Candidates will have or be very close to completing a PhD in a relevant subject area. Knowledge of African urban processes and Mandarin language proficiency are also highly desirable.
The post will involve approximately four months working in Africa (predominantly in Ethiopia and Uganda), as well as potentially a visit to China. When not based in field research countries, you will be based in the United Kingdom and will assist in organising field activities, reviewing literature and analysing data. There will also be opportunities to be involved in academic writing and project dissemination activities.
