The African Centre for Cities (University of Cape Town) has advertised a post-doctoral research fellowship linked to its new master’s programme in southern urbanism.
Scope
The postdoctoral fellowship is focussed on Urban Studies-Southern Urbanism”. The candidate will have expertise in: qualitative social research, with a firm grounding in social theory and interest in the Global South.Familiarity with (social) design, literature and pedagogy would have to be achieved during the course of the fellowship.
The specific tasks of the incumbent will be to:
- Form an active part of a new MPhil Urban Studies-Southern Urbanism
- Support the teaching effort of the programme, particularly the City Research Studio
- Compile a systematic record of the design and implementation process of the Urban Studies-Southern Urbanism programme
- Produce scholarly articles that are publishable in international peer reviewed journals, book chapters and contributions to the media in general
- Participate in the activities of African Centre for Cities
All these tasks will be carried out in close consultation with various ACC staff members and under the supervision of Dr António Tomás.
Conditions
Applicants are expected to have completed a doctoral degree in a area of study relevant to the proposed area of study (Geography, Sociology, Anthropology, Architecture, Planning, Urban Design etc.) within the past five years.
Successful candidates, as part of professional and intellectual development, will be required to participate in departmental activities such as limited teaching and supervision and duties incidental thereto.
Value and Tenure
The value of the Fellowship is R190,000 per year, over a twenty-four month period. The Fellowship is non-renewable for twenty-four months, The fellowship does not include relocation costs or fringe benefits. Conference grants may be available on application. The incumbent will be provided with a desk and appropriate access rights to use the research facilities of the University of Cape Town. The Fellowship will commence on 1 January 2018.

About ACC
African Centre for Cities was established in 2007 at the University of Cape Town as an urban research institute. ACC is based in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, but is interdisciplinary in its scope, drawing expertise on urban issues from across the university. The mission of ACC is to ‘facilitate critical urban research and policy discourse for the promotion of vibrant democratic and sustainable urban development in the Global South’.
